Spirit

Over the past few years, a question that has been asked of me from religious community members is "How is my relationship with God?" or "How is my relationship with Jesus?"

Pause.

Can we please rephrase this question?

If you read this and feel a twinge of defense -

Pause.

Pause some more.

(relax your brow)

Pause some more.

(breathe in)

Pause some more.

(breathe out)

Pause.

Listen and hear.

Why has that question become the norm to ask another person who has gone through a traumatic, life-altering, experience?

Is it based on concern or is it based on ego?

Only you can answer that truthfully within yourself. If you feel that twinge of defense rising, I would wonder if the question was based around ego.

Better questions to ask someone who you know has gone through hell can be

"How is your spirit?"

"How are your finances?"

"Do you have groceries?"

"How can I help?"

Trust me.

These questions are much more needed for unbound healing to occur.

If you are spiritual, isn't that why we are put on this Earth? So that we can support one another and not tear each other down when life circumstances has us down for the count?

Religion is lived by people who are afraid of hell. Spirituality is lived by people who have been through hell and come out enlightened. - Richard Rohr
